Is Stock Photography Sexist?...

Interesting article about changes in the stock photography world as well as a little history. Good read… I think the peach needs to be shinier,” Bustle senior creative director Isla Murray tells Dawn Foster, a staff graphic designer who has been slowly sucking a piece of fruit for the last several minutes. “Should we spray it with water? Or something else? How do we make it look more provocative?” Murray and Foster, along with several other editors from the women’s lifestyle site, are gathered inside a photo studio at the company’s Manhattan offices. The space is covered in props — melons, sprinkle cookies, plastic chili peppers, a fur rug, some sort of phallic purple thing covered in rhinestones that is almost certainly a dildo, piles of underwear, boxes of lip gloss, hot dogs stuffed into buns and slathered with ketchup. Michael Joseph | Nov. Speaker Nov03

Michael Joseph | Nov. Speaker

It’s all about the lighting….lighting is everything. Michael Joseph has almost 30 years of experience of Photographing Pets with their People. He’ll be sharing with you several different lighting techniques that he uses in the studio from soft boxes, hair lighting, kicker lights & reflectors. Then he’ll talk about some of his favorite outdoor lighting equipment that he uses with lightweight strobes and modifiers. He’ll also share with you his 10 favorite gadgets and gizmos that he can’t shoot without. He will also be ready to answer technical questions on lighting, posing, studio set up & sales. Have your questions ready! And, he’ll unveil his TopTen Secrets to Pet Photography. Originally from Allentown, PA, Michael Joseph has traveled throughout the eastern US, photographing people and their pets. Over 25 years, 15 states and more than 35,000 portrait sittings later, almost every breed of dog and cat have had their chance in front of MJ’s camera. In fact, if you could get all the dogs, cats, birds and horses that he’s photographed over the years, together at one time, you could easily fill each seat of any major football stadium! Although photographing families and their pets remains a top priority, MJ photographs a great deal of nonpet related assignments as well… whether it be weddings, families or children. And for the past 9 years, you may have seen MJ working freelance with Canon at various trade shows and conventions as they work with pros and give advice on camera functions and features. He has received his Master of Photography and Craftsman degrees from PPA, the Florida Photographer of the Year from FPP, Highest Case Score and the North Florida Photographer of the Year. Some additional distinctions include, threetime Florida Top Ten List, Kodak Gallery Award recipient.               [Show slideshow] Images courtesy of Amanda...

“DIGITAL KILLED THE PHOTOGRAPHER” A generational study   The digital war is over but who exactly won? We are facing a whole new world where we are continually challenged with an ever changing market, new ideas and beliefs, and we now even live in a cloud… but how is that any different than before? Well, it happened 15 minutes ago and was so yesterday.   This program is a light but serious discussion on how to understand the challenges the digital world has brought us and coming face to face with today’s consumer. We will look at the clash of the culture of yesterday and today, the accessibility and connectivity of the digital world and how this affects the photographic world. Understanding your market can assist you in dealing with the market.   JACKSON’S BIO Jackson is owner of Action Jackson Productions, serving his clients with photography, video, and sound work. Born and raised in Ocala, Florida, Jackson graduated from Covenant College with a BA in Psychology, Sociology, and Youth Ministry and a BA in Biblical Studies, then continued his studies at reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, FL focusing on youth and education. From this background, Jackson has always been interested and continued his study into today’s culture and generational studies.   Jackson is married with 5 children, believes that just because he is paranoid doesn’t mean there is not someone out there trying to kill him, an Eagle Scout and Assistant Cub Master, loves Parliamentary procedure, an avid Star Trek fan (properly pronounced “Trekker”), plays Sudoku, and has a general problem with colors being in the wrong place.   Jackson is currently President of the Florida Professional Photographers, having earned the Florida Service Award and Florida Education Degree, The Jim Abrisch Service Award,...

July Speaker | Andi Diamond

Like many female photographers, Andi Diamond went to undergrad and grad school for something completely unrelated to photography. After her son was born, her passion for healthcare faded and her desire to own her own creative business grew. In 2008, she started Andi Diamond Photography and has not looked back since. She quickly realized the importance of not only creating beautiful imagery for her clients, but in practicing a business methodology focused on pricing for profit. By charging appropriately, she can provide the high level of experience and attention that her clients desire, while also bringing home a paycheck that she feels proud of. Whether you are new to the industry or a seasoned pro, Andi will share some tips and tricks to help get your business on track and keep you in the black.       [Show...
